YouTube HD Demo

Written on November 30, 2007 – 5:54 pm | by Morten Rand-Hendriksen |

As previously mentioned YouTube intends to launch a high definition version of their service in the near future. The video above illustrates both what kind of quality we might expect and also what kind of problems YouTube needs to fix before this service goes live. The video in question is 960×540@6000kbit/s as opposed to YouTube’s regular 320×240 image and was posted by bypassing the regular YouTube compression. Unless you are on a very powerful broadband connection you’ll notice both a severe lag in download time and extreme glitching in the streaming due to it’s high bitrate and large size. This is precisely what YouTube has to somehow overcome if their HD aspirations are to succeed.
