NBC inks deal with TiVo for pop-up ads and more

Written on November 28, 2007 – 6:28 pm | by Morten Rand-Hendriksen |

The introduction of TiVo and other PVRs has caused a major headache for the networks because people simply skip past the commercials and thus taking away some of the advertising revenue. Not surprisingly the networks have been hard at work coming up with ways to curb this problem and today it was announced that NBC has inked a deal with TiVo to provide so called pop-up ads during recorded shows that when clicked on will provide the viewer with more info on the product.

We’ve already seen such ads in many internet video sites (Metacafe is infested by them and YouTube is rumored to be launching a similar service in the near future) so it should come as no surprise that this new and annoying form of advertising is making it’s way not only to your TV but even your PVR.

The new ads will appear whether you skip through the “regular” ads or not making it impossible for you to avoid them. Great…
