Make money off your online videos

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 |

With the recent release of YouTube/AdSense Video Units the concept of monetizing online video content has come back into focus (not that it ever left but still). The problem with the YouTube Video Units is that they only feature so-called “YouTube Partners” meaning only a selected few get the chance to have their videos generate money.

It remains a mystery how you are selected as a Partner but it seems obvious it has a lot to do with popularity. This is unfortunate because it leaves the majority of content creators out in the cold and only helps people who have already “made it”. One can only hope YouTube realizes it’s mistake and opens up for everyone to earn some money for their work.

In the meantime there are plenty of other ways of monetizing your video creations. Rather than go through them all I suggest you read through Robin Good’s excellent (though somewhat dated) article on the subject.

There are many existing services that can help your videos make money (Revver, MetaCafe and BrightCove to mention two) and some new ones are in their launch phase (LiveRail is one example) so the future looks bright even if Google/YouTube bungles their efforts.

We’ll be testing out some of these services with our other blog Dabbler.ca and report back on the results. But that shouldn’t stop you from trying as well. So get out there and start making some money!
